Unity & Fmod
Here is a showcase of my first game audio project. It was an exam assignment intended as a wrap-up of all we learned during the game audio course at Sonic College.
We were given a Unity 3D project with the core gameplay pre-programmed, meaning the character control, monster and damage mechanics. Also, there is a timer which means that you die if you don’t reach the end in time.
I designed the map, lighting and I also did some of the vegetation from scratch. And then of course, all audio is designed by me. I worked in Fmod with 3D sound sources, perfect loops and nested audio.
My game follows a miner on a hostile planet in a dark sci-fi-setting. The human race is on the losing side in a war against the alien race Tich Jed Sharoc, and we are deeply in need of resources to support our defense efforts. That’s where you come in! A miner on a hostile planet. It is a dangerous job, and the day goes horribly wrong when your oxygen supply is damaged by an uncontrolled partial collapse of the mineshaft. Once you get out of the mine, you only have limited time to get back to your spaceship before your oxygen levels are depleted.
Watch the gameplay below:)
The idea is for the player to follow the lights forming a path, as they are devices that scares alien predators away by emitting specific sound- and lightwaves.
The portal leading out from the cave and the lights are all 3D-sound emitting objects, meaning that if you stand in front of the object, the sound comes from the center. If you stand with your left side to the object, the sound comes form the left etc. This works in stereo, but in immersive formats it really shines.
In the above gameplay, our miner-protagonist made it in time and avoided too many monster attacks (yes, the monsters are invisible -it wasn’t a priority to animate them. Let’s just say they are alien predators with highly developed body camouflage). However, the next playthrough showcases a less fortunate fate, as the player is attacked multiple times, and takes too long to find her way to the ship.
The hostile predator sounds intensifies as you stray further away from the safe path that the lights outline. As more time passes, the player grasps more desperately for air, and the valves in the spacesuit struggles to keep up. Random weather sound effects and ambience completes the setting -and the player needs to watch out! The violent winds can blow you off the safe path!
Thanks for watching!
